Years ago, I was driving through a new part of our subdivision. 12 yr old girl rode her bike straight into the street from a driveway. Slammed on my brakes, didn't hit her straight on, but she fell off her bike and the car skidded over her. Cops came, took all the statements, said I wasn't at fault, she was, I didn't even get a ticket. Her parents sued me, the builder of a new house that it happened in front of and the BRICK COMPANY that had delivered a load of bricks in front of that house. Their claim was that the bricks obscured vision even though they were behind the curb and this was not even at a corner! My insurance company hired the lawyer for me. Deposition time, it was a real circus. Lawyers for the little girl were the lowest ambulance-chasing sleazel-balls you can imagine. Tried to get people to say stuff that wasn't true, wanted to fight the other lawyers in the parking lot.
Anyway, the insurances companies settled, I wanted to fight it in court, my lawyer said it wasn't my decision. My insurance took the smallest hit, biggest hit (into the six figures) was the builder of the house. I felt bad for this guy. He was just building a house, materials were placed on the property in same manner as hundreds of homes in our sub at the time. But the girl's parents saw $$$ and saw this as their turn to hit the lawsuit lotto.
