I think it is a gear drive. The lever on the right should have multiple positions like a regular manual transmission. If it is worn it will feel loose and very imprecise. It will have a two speed system on the left (use it rapidly from slow to fast or fast to slow do not ease it in at all it is a switch, not to be feathered. It is also not used with the clutch, it is internal clutches that do the shifting It is a Torque amplifier and reduces the speed about 30% in the rear position. Read up on them in the Archives. Worn shifters can be repaired with new roll pins, new links, and a book. Jim
