Well, we bought a 2009 Jetta diesel wagon new for about $22K. I bought a 2000 Jetta TDI sedan used in 2003 with 33K miles for about $16K. I still have it now with 237K. Bought an 84 Mercedes 300D with 150K for $5,300 in 2005. It now has over 200k. None of these has needed anything beyond normal maintenance.
Paying somewhat more for initial quality usually pays off in the long run. I don't know what they go for in Germany.
