I can�t speak to the rest of the country but around here; 18% unemployed. Oh, and that just the ones collecting, another 9% are off the roles and are supported by someone else. 34% are on welfare, and 21% on Social Security. Of the 34%, 48% do not work or work under the table and do not contribute to the tax role. Of the 21%, 77% do not work, but I have no numbers of investment and savings, nor do I have a break out of disabled vs. retired.
All added up, a minimum of 42% are unemployed (either by choice or not). If a third of the SS folks, who I have no beef with, they earned it, are counted in you get real close to half the folks around here not working.
And I agree completely with Dean. Back in the day 25% was considered a great depression because no one provided a free lunch. If the government stopped sending checks today, there would be rioting in the streets tomorrow.
