When I was a kid, dad saw a horse tied up in town, in the winter, skinny as a rail. Bought him off the guy for 25 bucks with a saddle. Hauled him home, had to feed him very carefully for several days, pulled him to his feet in the mornings when he had laid down. We thought we had a riding pony. Well, anyway, grew up to be about 1200 lbs. Dad had him gelded, my brother rode him a lot but he was tough, used a military jaw breaker bit to hold him, could out run all the neighbors horses hands down. Put a harness on him when one of the team went lame and dad planted corn with him. Put that saddle on though you better be ready to hang on.
