Nothing. If the generator was tested it is polarized. If it was used in a vehicle it is polarized. If it has been sitting for years not used, the residual magnetism in the field iron cores might have dwindled to the point that it will not self start from lack of that magnetic force in the iron. Polarizling just puts that magnetism back in the field core (not the windings, the iron they are wound on) If a generator is switched from Pos ti Neg, polarizing is all that is needed to make it switch.
