I've used both water base and oil base. No comparison for lasting. Go with the oil/solvent base. Round here they spray it on, spray rig is on a truck that drives along the fence, one guy on each side of the fence with a long hose. It is a bit of an art and a very dirty job. Be sure a new fence has dried for several months and the wood is very dry, no rain in a week or more.
Lots of fence painters here in KY bluegrass area. I tried the "do it yourelf" method once. Never again.
