Dave, I had one that sounds similar and these things are actually a pretty cool "monster garage" type fabrication. Ours pulled the horses off 4 overhead legs. It was electric powered, belt driven into a 3 speed trans that was then belt driven into a car rear end at the pinion. The rear was stood on end- bottom axle removed, spider in diff welded,belt drive to pinion, overhead booms attached to a car wheel bolted to the upright axle. Pulleys looked to have been washer/dryer stuff . The kids used to attach swings and ride it like a carnival ride- I've thought about building one again for just that purpose.
