Unfortunately we are returning to the past when the robber barons ruled. But today it is the stock holders which believe or are made to believe they deserve outlandish returns, and they are willing to pay manangement big money to deliver them. Since this hasn't yet become a socialist country (although the current adminstration is working hard on it), the stockholders aren't required to fund jobs, so the money/jobs go to situations with the highest return. So manangement squeezes workers for more claw backs and they have a powerful position. In the not too far past it was likely most of a corporation's stockholders were in this country and they could benefit from the higher wages, either by lower taxes or more sales. Today considerable stock is owned outside this country and they could care less about the US labor force. So unless we are willing to reintroduce trade barriers or continue massive government support (more socialism), the future for manufacturing workers isn't attractive.
