Hope it is not a broken rod.. The early Kohler 17 had no forced-oiling.. The "Series II" engine does have an oil pump. which is what I put in the Bolens..we have 3..one with a Big-Bore Onan from a small Bob-Cat..!!
After we lost one rod, they told us to always run every non-pressurized engine 1/4" over full..never lost another one since.. It did vibrate with the broken rod, but did not make any noises..except that, that piston was not moving..! I just don't remember seeing any counter-shaft in that engine..
