Got to thinking about grounds this morning, so I played around.
On this car, four or five accessory grounds are stacked on one lug inside the right front fender. I took them loose, and all were as clean and bright as new.
Then I got to playing around with a digital ohmmeter. From the negative post on the battery to the accessory ground in the fender, I read 2 ohms resistance, about what you'd expect. However, I read 30 ohms from the negative post to the engine block. The main cable bolts onto an exhaust manifold bolt where there is rust prone.
This particular battery has top lugs as well as side lugs, so to experiment I left the original main ground hooked up and added another main ground cable from the top negative lug on the battery to one of the alternator mounting bolts.
So far, so good. It was acting up before I did that and now seems OK. I drove it around a while today and it was fine. I'll drive it a few days and if it seems to be cured, I'll replace the original ground cable with a new one bolted somewhere on the engine block where it doesn't rust.
Thanks to all who responded, especially the ones who reminded me of the grounds. That's what's great about this forum. There's enough combined experience to where someone usually has an answer.
