BCnT is correct and your complaint is common. The Ford transmission is too fast in low gear to handle a rear mounted roto-tiller or a rear mounted snowblower for that matter. Addition of a Sherman step down won't help either. The PTO is "ground driven" and will turn slower. I've often wondered if the tiller would be able to propel the tractor forward (assuming the tines rotate in that direction) on level ground if set at the correct depth with the tractor in nuetral. If it propelled the tractor too fast you could either raise the tiller or use the brakes to slow it down. Probably not in all situations. On hills, forget it. But it might be worth a try before you run off and buy a new tractor. One roto tiller that will work is a Howard 3 point roto-tiller from Australia (I believe) which provides gearing to accomodate the farm tractor speeds. I'm told they're hard to find and $$$$$.
