When planted at high population rates the stems remain fairly small even when 10-12 feet tall, the nutrients are in the leaves and young fast growing leaves are more digestible percentage wise than more mature leaves, the higher volume of the taller forage pretty much negates the nutritional percentage loss. Prussic acid is normally not a problem with sudans and hybrids unless grazing on new growth during or following a drouth, prussic acid, if present, dissipates while the hay is curing.
