Look at the coil to see what the polarity is. If the "-" coil terminal is connected to the distributor and "+" to the battery switch, it's negative ground. 12V systems would be negative ground, 6V are positive. It may have a 12V generator, which would still be negative ground. If it has a generator, it should be marked if it's 12V, and it would likely have a resistor in line with the coil, or the coil would be marked 12V. Starter will turn in the correct direction whether 6V or 12V, regardless of which battery terminal is grounded.
