Mike, you should define your needs a little better. We did, 25 yrs ago, and made an excellent decision. N.C. was the only other state we seriously considered. That was after land-shopping much of the West, where my wife and I were raised.
We find the economy here to be pretty good, with our income tied to retail sales in both Va and NC. Our community is always rated at or near the top nationally for preferred retirement locations, based on factors of importance to retirees obviously. They also always mention the big drawback of high housing cost here, great place to live if you can swallow that. Other parts of Va don't have that problem.
Both states have huge diversity, something for almost anybody. We chose a mountaintop with no neighbors, but only 20 minutes from a major hospital. Tractor clubs I know nothing about, but there are lots of old tractors around. I'm down to only 2 tractors now. Both earn their keep.
