You got it right. Too much signal and no differential cancelling. If it was done right then the pickup wire would be a twisted pair up to the spark wire and then attached to the coil of wire wrapped around it. They are just hoping some stray coupling will be enough and not too much. It is very uncontrolled.
Given it is a single ended pickup I also doubt there is a differential amp inside the unit so it probably has to be something you live with. Keep the pickup wire away from the other spark wires is the best you can do on the cheap. It doesn't have to be near the end either. Anyplace that is not likely to cause direct sparking to the pickup is best.
