Yes the cleaner does work. But it must be mass airflow cleaner NOT ANYTHING else. Mitsubishi should have the hot wire mass air flow sensor which does get dirty and needs to be cleaned. Basically air flow is measured by heating up a small wire and measuring how long it takes the airstream to cool it. As for running, I can't remember if it defaults to a predetermined value or not. If you unplug it and turn the ignition on you will set a code for it. If the mass air flow sensor is going bad electrically, we used to tap on them lightly and see if the engine stumbles.
