I never thought much of the 970 because there were not that many around in my area when they were new. My BIL ended up buying two of them in 1981 and only recently traded one of them off. If those two represent the rest of the them I would say they are every bit as good as the IH 966/986 and the JD 4020. They can take a beating and keep in ticking.
Personally I always loved our 886 with the German deisel, great fuel economy and if you took any kind of care of it they run forever. Ours had two overhauls - one at 10K hours and the second at 20K hours and it was still as good tractor at 25K when it was traded - just wasn't big enough anymore.
