This is probably on the right track. They no longer "need" this tower site due to buyouts/mergers of various cell companies over the years. They likely have 2-3 more towers nearby that they will use instead of yours.
I agree with what others have said - call their bluff. It might make you some decent $$$.
Also, check your contract to see what they will do with the tower site if/when they vacate it. Will they take the tower down? Will they remove all the concrete piers, etc? Utilities?
