JD2ACWD, There is a roof coating that will go directly on rusty Sheet Iron, I mean rusty to the point that there is no galvanized left!! This the best stuff I have ever seen, so do not use Aluminum paint. If your roof has imperfections the fibers in it, will fill and meld with the liguid porition of the roof compound. it will turn water and make an old roof look like new and preserve it for years to come. I did a roof on my old barn about 15 yrs ago,it was about 50 yrs old at the time I coated it, it is still doing well, even though it could use a new coat to get it to looking new again. I used a 8 in wide brush bolted to an old broom handle so I could stand and paint it on the roof. Hope this helps.
