Strength is an interesting thing with threads. While it is true that because there are more threads per inch of material, you do get more threads engaged with fine threads; however each tread has less shear area, so you end up with the same thread shear area for both course and fine threads. What is increased with fine threads is the root diameter of the bolt, and that can make a significant difference. Sometimes, however, it is the nut that is most critical part of the connection. I've had nuts fail because they stretched and slipped around the threads. In this instance, course threads would be stronger because the nut would have to stretch more in order to slip past the threads.
