Diesel Fuel

I previously asked a question about diesel fuel. Thank you for the quick responses. I would like to rephrase my question though. I am more or less wondering "what" happens to the diesel fuel. I had mentioned that we have clean diesel fuel approximately 20yrs old. We have, this season, used that fuel in one of our older tractors and the only thing that happened was that it ran a bit warmer than usual. Our neighbour also used the same fuel to do his seeding this spring and did not have any problems either. I am wondering what changes happen to the fuel, what would now be missing from the fuel.
