Of course timing of plunger to needle is vital, but usually the excessive bolt shearing is caused by the needles dropping as soon as the bale lenght mechanism trips the dog on head. The needle brake has to hold head from turning until it is driven which will occur after plunger has passed plunger stop and tips of needles. Timing is to be so plunger is like 3 or more inches past needle tips when they enter chamber and are back out of the way in time for next plunger cycle. Plunger trip should set parallel to bottom of chamber. Needles need to clear disks by a hair to 1/8th inch while touching knotter frame to stabilize them and about as far past as you can go with out the pipe hitting on the bottom end. Set them by turning by hand with empty chamber. On a 46 you need faith but they work, "sometimes".
