I clean all the crud off the outside that I can. Use a little flat screwdriver to get in nooks and crannys.
Then I use Gunk brand carb. cleaner, spray it on, scrub with a tooth brush or brass brush. Just keep treating it with carb cleaner and brushing and using the air hose. I also keep a little plastic tray with some carb cleaner in the bottom to scrub small parts.
