Good question! People are always asking me where I get my backing tracks. I don’t have any backing tracks. :>)
I use a somewhat dated technology called "midi". Stands for "musical instrument device interface".
I.E. A musical instrument can be made to communicate with any other "midi" instrument and this technology can be used to generate wanted tones on the fly.
Since music is nothing more than certain tones/instruments/volumes happening at exact times, these tones can be "programmed", manipulated and made to happen at the exact times wanted within any given song.
Downside is that it takes a lot of expensive equipment and even more labor/time/hair-pulling to make it happen exactly like I want it to. One song will usually take me anywhere from 3 weeks to sometimes months to program.
Here's a screen shot of the bass programming for just 6 measures of an intro. This "sequence of events" is then fed from the electronic clock of my laptop into a tone generator; the flat gizmo in the second picture. This little guy will then generate the bass and the drum sounds for me.
I know, I know. I've never been able to explain it very well. :<(
All I can tell ya is that it took me 10 years to figure it all out and make it work as it should with the end result being that I and I alone can play the whole darned she-bang and do it with absolutely nothing being pre-recorded.
It all happens instantaneous and live and at that point all I have to do is play that goofy guitar over the top of it all. :>)
