Allan, I have to admit, I laugh hysterically when reading your post. Why? I understand your situation and the parents" too. I am 34, have 2 boys, and currently have a 3rd and final on the way. I know what it is like to wish for grandma and grandpa to show up because "I" am the one who needs a break. But I also can view it from the other side.

I was the only grandkid of 34 who loved my grandparents" farm. All the others didn"t like it but would go to fish, ride 4 wheelers, snowmobiles, and all the other fun stuff. I wanted to spend time with my grandfather so I went to the farm to work. Yep, I picked rock, pitch forked spreader fulls of manure, hand-weed eated the entire farm, washed and waxed every piece of machinery on my vacation, and walked beans...all on my vacation. Then, I got treated like a king. This started when I was a little boy and lasted all the way until he died. Yeah, I don"t mind admitting I was his favorite but I earned it by working my butt off. He taught me to love the land, the love of agriculture, and to love antique farm equipment. He made such an impact on me that I completed all my schooling in the ag industry; even was going to move 600 miles after graduation to work myself into buying him out and taking over the family farm. He died way too soon right in the middle of my college years so that changed but I still work in the industry.

I can still crack up about your post because I know he felt the same way many times when all the kids/grandkids came "home." But, don"t close the door of the tractor cab too soon because you may never know what kind of impression you can have on one of those little guys now, or in a few years. You just might find someone who idolizes you and possibly your "mini-me." :)
