For dents, don't just smack 'em with a hammer and try to flatten them back because they will leave a dimple that is hard to get out. Work the dent from the outsides all the way around, slowly, carefully until you have the dent straight, then the gouge from the impact should be worked out the same way. You can shrink the metal by heating a small area the size of a dime and letting it cool to get the last of the dent gone. Think of how the impact happened..sharp object strikes, making a gouge,the impact continues shoving the area around the gouge in..now just work it backwards. Many people make the mistake of smacking it dead center with a hammer..at this point the metal has been stretched and needs to be carefully brought back into its shape
