79 J. Deere 950

I have a 1979 John Deere 950 diesel tractor that is giving me a fit. When i try to start it, the solenoid clicks when i turn the key, but it takes 25-50 key turns before it will start.(if then. sometimes i have to jump it.) It seems that the battery may not be charging properly. It has a new alternator, starter, voltage regulator,battery and i have checked for shorts.I am not, however certain of the alternator connections. Can anyone help? This is driving me crazy!
