Ditto on the sniping. Sniping won't help you against someone who has already bid what they are willing to pay (unless you are willing to pay more) but it does keep you from tipping your hand.
I have found if I just wait until the end (or use a sniping program) I have been getting things cheaper since we aren't getting into a bidding war. I put in how much I'm willing to spend, do it once right at the end, and call it a day.
