Perkins Diesel Problem

I have a MF 283 with a Perkins A4248, 4cyl. with
a CAV pump. It was running fine then I pull the
shut off handle and as the motor shut down it was
starting to make a awful grinding sound. Started
it again (started right up) and the grinding is
there so shut it right off again. Anybody got an
idea what this could be? Oil level is perfect and
it was running fine prior to pulling the stop
handle. Tractor only has 1000 easy hours and very
good service. Thanks for any help. Jim.
