I have a Hi-Co Howse 100 HP brushhog. I also use grade 2 half inch bolts. I buy them 4 inches long , so that I don't have threaded part of the bolt in the hole. Only the smooth shoulder of the bolt. I use to do like the other guys had mentioned; I would use lock nuts , double nut , and also drill holes and put cotter pins. Now I do it the easy simple way. I slide a 4" bolt through the holes in the shaft. Then hit the end of the bolt with a hammer , rock , etc. , bending the end of the bolt a little. Try it! This is simple , and it works great. Carry spares with you in the field. If you break another one , just drive the broken one out by useing the new one as a punch. Bend the end of the new one , so that it will not slide back out , and keep on mowing.
