I cut my homemade posts at 8ft so they fit nicely in the bed of my truck with the tailgate closed. I think the standard is more like 8.5ft for corner posts though (probably because that's what railroad ties are).
I also make 6ft posts that I sharpen and drive in with a sledge hammer. I alternate them with t-posts since they make it harder for cattle to lean the fence over.
With telephone poles, I'd cut them at 8.3ft and use them for corners.
