If you haven't had a lot of mechanical experience I'd say start off with something simple and fairly common. Lots of JD A & B, Allis B,C,WC,WD, Farmall H,M,A,B and Oliver, Moline common model around. Parts are fairly inexpensive and available. Second part of the equation is your future as an engineer. I graduated from college 46 years ago, BSME, but I had the HUGE advantage over most of the other guys(no gals in those days) in that I had grown up on a farm and had personal first hand, up close, practical experience with all kinds of machinery. What you will learn restoring a tractor will stand you in very good stead later on. Two of my sons are engineers, and both got a lot of experience here on my little farm. Both are very practical, common sense, kind of engineers. Don't mean to get off on a rant, but what makes a person successful is the ability to make good decisions and stick with them. You will learn some of that trying to restore some old piece of iron. In my years I've known a lot of people who transferred out of engineering to something else, but none that transferred in. Today's Featured Article - Product Review: Black Tire Paint - by Staff. I have been fortunate in that two of my tractors have had rear tires that were in great shape when I bought the tractor. My model "H" even had the old style fronts with plenty of tread. My "L" fronts were mismatched Sears Guardsman snow tires, which I promptly tossed.
