HELP! Alternator conversion causes battery drain

I recently converted my MF-65 from a generator/regulator setup to an alternator with an internal regulator (GM Delco). It charges very well but discharges the battery when turned off. Wiring is as follows:

Terminal 1: Is connected to the BAT term. on the alternator.

Terminal 2: Connected to IGN on ignition switch.

BAT terminal: goes to the ammeter and ultimately to the pos. battery post.

Have I wired incorrectly or do I need to add a diode or something. Thanks in advance for any information anyone may be able to provide.
David
