I always think of on October 13, the US Navy's birthday. All of my family going back 3 generations has served in the Navy. I did not, but my younger brother was there for the first go-around in the Gulf. He was aboard, IIRC, an Iwo Jima class carrier in that war. My father was stationed in New Orleans during WWII. My grandfather, who came to the USA in 1906 from Germany as a kid, lied about his age in 1917 to join the Navy and served in WWI. During WWII he volunteered and served in the Seabees in the Pacific. He was on Iwo Jima. That has always been a point of pride in my family.
