I replaced the DOT 3 in a 67 Corvair with DOT 5 back in 1986. I have had absolutely no problems with it since. The advantage of DOT 5 as you are probably aware is that it does not attract moisture as DOT 3 does (As I remember, it also will not remove paint like DOT 3 will). I rebuilt the wheel cylinders at that time also and flushed the system with several cans of DOT 3.
