What's your criteria for "best"? That varies from person to person.
I planted for years with JD #71's. As far as plate planters, they're simple, easy to understand, reliable, and parts are never far away. They do a good job with corn or beans. They're light enough to use 4 or 6 rows behind a smaller tractor. (important to me)
Most of the big guys in this area have 7000 series Deere planters. (Even the red/blue/orange guys) Deere did a fairly good job from the start. They have all sorts of aftermarket parts and accessories available to tailor the planter to your needs. And with any equipment that's so popular, getting advice on how to deal with a problem is much easier. (More people who know about them)
