Grass reproduces by self-seeding and through runners. A lawn is permanent in that respect. I'll bet that Burrhead is right on the money. If that spruce had branches within 6' or so of the ground, the grass wasn't getting enough light. As the tree grew and shaded the ground, the grass weakened and died. There are types of grass that do better in low light areas than others. But as long as the tree is gone, most any grass will do fine in full sunlight.
