Hood has to come off to do the job correctly. Not even sure you could get it off with out doing so and have not tried. As for the gasket the valve cover maybe twisted and if it is which is sort of common it can be very hard to get one to stop leaking. My self I like to use a small amount of silicone sealer on the gaskets and I also make sure that I do not tighten them down to hard or they will leak. there is a fine line between good and to tight
