Here in parts of central NY cover crops are a cash or forage crop, very important to the overall profit of a farm. Oats allow some farmers to "double crop" acerage, depending on the growing year. We harvest the oat and straw crop, and if the fall growing season lasts into Oct. we can harvest a cutting of alfalfa. Our family farm is blessed with honyway loam on limestone bed rock. (perfect alfalfa ground with sufficient rain fall)Just north of here and 500' less elevation, they have heavy clay ground. laies wet long into late spring and cover crops can either work for them or against them. (rainfall+- fine edge) Just another 5mi. north and another 500' drop in altitude, we have river bottom loam and gravel ground. Again, weather makes or breaks the quality of the harvest. In answer to your question there is no general answer. Most areas have Micro Enviroments. Look to the farmers who have been sucessful in your area and do what they do.
