I agree with the post further down about not setting the posts in concrete. All the water will soak into the post and it will rot over time. I've worked on several fence replacement jobs with a farmer who also has a big pole hay shed. Poles set in concrete will seem like new above ground but be rotted below ground. Poles packed with gravel will still be like new in the ground. Having the hole a little bigger, lets you tamp it better. Pouring a pad in the hole first is a good idea though. Dave
