In the oil field one uses pipe dope on every connection of drill pipe. If pipe dope is not used or a poor grade is used the well or string of pipe can be lost. A string a drill pipe is not cheap (some cases millions of $$).. It is also
not fun to lose a well or get someone killed because of drillpipe connection failure.
