I had a tire shop straighten a rim on a car once. The fellow used about a 3 lb hammer and used his vise as an anvil. The dent was not large, and I had no problems with the car and I put several tens of thousands more miles on it. I have also pounded out a couple dings in the front wheels of my Farmall B with a hammer and anvil. The rims are fairly soft steel so they form easily. I don't use the tractor much (not like a farmer would) but have had no problems with it in the two years since I did this.
