The reason for backfiring generally is that the mixture is too lean. This could just be a carb adjustment or a vacuum leak in the manifold area, usually the gaskets between the carb/manifold or head/manifold. These older updraft type carbs do not have accelerator pumps as such that are found on cars etc but instead rely on a "well" type pool of gas to compensate for fuel lag when the throttle is punched open quickly. The problem could be ignition but since it's not constant, I would look at the fuel system first by checking all fuel filters etc.
