The alternator output wire should run to one post of the amp guage, one or more wires to power ign,lights, etc should be connected to the same amp guage post as the alternator. The other amp guage post is connected to the battery(usually at the starter switch). This is if the alternator is a "one wire" model. If the amp guage reads backwords, then switch the wires from side to side on the guage.
