Marc, I suspect that after having sat for a long time, the points are not making as good a contact as they should, the plugs are weak and dirty, and the plug wires need replacing. Often an engine that is cold will backfire as it is reved quickly. After it has warmed up there would be no problem. A carb rebuild is in order.
Look over the aforementioned areas and judge from there. I am betting you don't have a serious problem, just a need for a serious tune-up.
