The 982 would be your best bet if you can find one, I don't think they were produced by MTD after the sale. If not then I'd go a model older and get a Quietline like a 1250/1450/1650. The older Kohler single cylinder engines in them are much more reliable and cheaper to repair or rebuild than the two cylinder Kohlers or the Onan engines. Change the hytran and filter and they are good to go for years.
The 82 series had early versions with the cast iron rear end and axle tubes, the later version built by MTD had an aluminun housing that is not nearly as durable. This could be an issue when hooking a 4000 pound boat to it.
