The battery is only discharged during starting (glow plug use, cranking etc) after that unless your powering lights or something your ok.
Overtime, you will eventually deplete the battery and potentially you are taking life (longevity)out of the battery in doing so.
I have a 801 diesel ford that has a shorted out generator, so no charge (I have mine disconnected). I use the tractor and when I'm done I put it on a timed trickle charge to keep my battery topped off. This isn't a solution, just something to get me by until I, like you can make the proper repair.
