repair of broken axle

My brother has a 801 ford. He needs to put the new bearing and retainer on a used axle. The instuctions tell him to heat the retainer to 800 degrees, use a 2 1/4 I.D. pipe and drive the retainer on. To much heat and the retainer will not hold the bearing secure. My question is how do you know when the retainer is at 800 deg. How close to 800 does it need to be? Can you put the retainer on with a big hammer if the retainer isn't at 800 deg? Any comments would be helpful.
