full sun. well drained soil best. needs high fertility. eventually, it will spread and crowd itself- then the stalks (actually petioles) will start to get spindly. when that happens, dig it up before it starts growing in the spring and split up the crowns, replant. say, 3' between plants, 6' or so between rows. what we do is dig a hole, dump some manure in the bottom, then plant on top of that. fertilize each spring. we mulch heavily with compost primarily to keep the weeds down, but also to help out the soil- fertility, structure, living things, etc.
we had a couple plants that pretty much got ignored for years. then i read how it needs plenty of nutrients, so we gave it some more care with great results. this spring we divided about 7 plants into about 60.
